The National Parent Teacher Association (PTA) commends President-elect Barack Obama in naming Arne Duncan, chief executive officer of Chicago Public Schools, as his Secretary of Education.  Headquartered in Chicago, PTA leadership has long supported the reforms Duncan undertook to raise student achievement.

Mr. Duncan, a strong advocate for parental involvement, worked in collaboration with the Illinois PTA and has demonstrated a willingness to listen and act on parent-friendly ideas and concerns.  His record of raising student achievement bodes well for all of America’s children.

It’s important to note that this cabinet position is one of the most important and toughest cabinet positions in an administration.  Mr. Duncan has hard work ahead of him and we look forward to helping him and his team with the reauthorization of NCLB, increasing education funding and making parent involvement a priority so that every child reaches their full potential.
