Coalition releases Common Core standards draft
Many educators pleased with proposal

Education stakeholders were generally pleased on Monday with what could well become the basis for de facto national K-12 standards for English and math.
The National Governors Association's Center for Best Practices and the Council of Chief State School Officers released the first public draft of common standards on Monday. The highly anticipated standards are the official opening salvo in the groups' Common Core State Standards Initiative, a process being led by governors and chief state school officers in 51 states and territories…
National PTA President Charles J. Saylors said the proposed standards offer the potential to ensure equity among schools, districts and states. PTA is an endorsing partner of the Initiative.
“Geographic or socioeconomic factors should not dictate the level of education that all students are entitled to receive,” said Saylors. “The great benefit of the standards is that they will ensure a level playing field among states, school districts and schools…”

Ambassador: Deloris Jordan
